Bineshi Albert: "The issue we had been organizing around was protection of the sacred site on the west side of Albuquerque. That issue in and of itself was pretty complex in terms of sprawl, sprawl development in the community, having accountability with elected officials, how budgets are developed and spent in the city, which neighborhoods get a priority in terms of budget spending. And so that was the core of the organization’s issues that we were working on and so we had a few opportunities that people were actually able to vote on the particular petroglyph issue. We had a street bond election a couple years ago where there was a good number of dollars disproportionately given to just this one road. […] So we looked at the issue and decided, well, if the street bond is going to go up for the public to vote on, we have to be able to engage in the debate."
