Bineshi Albert: "Our work around the protection of a sacred site here in Albuquerque really centered on a good number of agencies and the city and county government making a decision about it, and we realized very early on that that side of the work we also had to engage in, in terms of who are making policy decisions for our community. […] And so we really started then to focus more on the Native American community in Albuquerque urban area and as a constituency that we felt was pretty underrepresented in the political arena. And as far voter engagement, voter registration drives, it was also a community that was often times overlooked. And so that’s what we decided we wanted to work on and we started doing more in the Native American community and created, initially, what was a project called the Native American Voters Alliance project."
