Bineshi Albert: "We were really surprised that there was as not much accessible information about Native American voters in Albuquerque. New Mexico does track race and ethnicity but it’s also based on people self-selecting to disclose that information. But New Mexico also has a Native American election information program as part of the Secretary of State’s office but the way that they track Native American voters is by counting precincts that are predominantly Native American communities. So then when you come to an urban area like Albuquerque or Santa Fe it sort of gets lost in the mix again. Which makes that the reasons why we wanted to do the Native American Voters Alliance that much more important. We want to create this database of Native American voters out in the community – and not only of a database but as a base of people who will vote for their community’s self-interest."
